The US Open is proving to be a great venue for Jelena Janković this year. Yesterday, Tues Sep. 2, she made it into her first semi-final in a Grand Slam tournament.
From the Australian Herald Sun online:
Jankovic, 23, ousted Austrian Sybille Bammer 6-1 6-4 in 90 minutes yesterday, while Russian fifth seed Dementieva rolled Swiss 15th seed Patty Schnyder 6-2 6-3 in 76 minutes.
Jankovic blitzed Bammer to win the first set in 33 minutes, then traded seven breaks with the left-hander.
Janković is pushing for her first Grand Slam title win. From all reports I’ve read it seems No. 1 for the women is really up for grabs. At this point there is no true No.1 after Ana Ivanović lost in early matches. Jelena is currently seeded No. 2. The women’s singles semi-finals will take place Friday, September 5.
