Serbian, Croatian, Bosnian, Or Montenegrin? Or Just ‘Our Language’?
I‘m sort of a first generation born Croatian/Serbian. My mother is Croatian and was born in America. Her parents came over from Croatia to the US in the early 1900s. My father was born in what was known as Yugoslavia at the time. He moved to America in the seventies. So I’m half first generation, and second generation from the area formerly known as Yugoslavia. Confusing, I know! I often get asked what language do I speak. And honestly I don’t know. I’ve been around Croatians, Serbians, and Bosnians my whole life so I know my speaking is all mixed up to native speakers.
I came across this article today and thought it was an interesting read explaining what’s going on with language distinctions in the Balkan region today. There is still a dispute going on as to whether there are distinct languages, or one language and dialects of that one. It highlights what these distinctions mean politcally, personally, and the implications for businesses such has publishing and film-making. Read on for a full explanation.

Lucky magazine featured Macedonian fashion designer, Risto Bimbiloski, in “The Best New Designers” feature in the September 08 issue. (By the way, US star Milla Jovovich is on the cover. She’s half Serbian and Russian).
Growing up in Macedonia had an unexpected advantage for Risto Bimbiloski: “It’s a culture of knitting,” he says. And one that he clearly soaked up: The 33-year-old, who has also been the men’s knitwear designer for Louis Vuitton for the past four seasons, has a knack for clothes that feel uncontrived and effortless, despite surprising flourishes like bold hardware or a mix of different weaves. “I aim for versatility,” he says. “Like the big, visible zipper-it can be sensual or sensible depending on how open or closed it is.”

Well, this is exciting news! Madonna performed in Budva, Montenegro, one of the stops of her Sticky & Sweet World Tour. Madonna has never performed in the Balkans so this is great news for region and for tourism. Big international stars are performing more and more in balkan countries. Lenny Kravitz performed this summer in Macedonia. Madonna’s show is outside on Jaz Beach.

Sadly, Serena Williams defeated Jelena Janković in the women’s singles final on Sunday, but it was her first time even getting into quarterfinal rounds at the US Open and she made all the way to the final. So I’m sure more good things will be on the way for Jelena this year and going into 2009. Stay tuned!

Unfortunatley Novak Djoković’s run at the US Open has come to an end. Djoković defeated Andy Roddick in the quarterfinals on Friday and moved to the semi-final round today, playing against Roger Federer. Maybe it was the inclement hurricane weather but it was not Novak’s day. It was a close game but Federer beat Djoković in the fourth set.

Now for the good news. Jelena Janković defeated Elena Dementieva yesterday in the women’s singles semi-final. Not only is this Jelena’s first time advancing to final rounds in the US Open but she has made it to the final! This is exciting tennis. The women’s singles final was scheduled for today at 7pm but due to bad weather from all the hurricane activity on the east coast it was cancelled. Stay tuned to see what the weather brings tomorrow. Hopefully the dangerous hurricanes will lessen and the US Open will be on again.

The US Open is proving to be a great venue for Jelena Janković this year. Yesterday, Tues Sep. 2, she made it into her first semi-final in a Grand Slam tournament.
From the Australian Herald Sun online:
Jankovic, 23, ousted Austrian Sybille Bammer 6-1 6-4 in 90 minutes yesterday, while Russian fifth seed Dementieva rolled Swiss 15th seed Patty Schnyder 6-2 6-3 in 76 minutes.
Jankovic blitzed Bammer to win the first set in 33 minutes, then traded seven breaks with the left-hander.
Janković is pushing for her first Grand Slam title win. From all reports I’ve read it seems No. 1 for the women is really up for grabs. At this point there is no true No.1 after Ana Ivanović lost in early matches. Jelena is currently seeded No. 2. The women’s singles semi-finals will take place Friday, September 5.

Not feeling well during yesterday’s match, Novak Djoković still defeated Spain’s Tommy Robredo in another nearly four hour match and is noted as the Player of the Day on the US Open site. Next he will face Andy Roddick in the Friday quarterfinals. Novak in an interview earlier in the week said all the traveling since Beijing in so many different time zones took a bit of a toll on him and he didn’t feel quite as rested up as he should be going into the US Open. He has been really looking forward to the US Open because of his performance last year and his win in Australia. He feels very comfortable on the courts in New York and so far, even though he’s experienced some tough matches, he is showing his top skills in getting the wins. He is a bit worried going into the quarterfinal against Roddick that he his not at 100% physically. Hopefully he can get some rest and pull off a win to advance to Saturday’s semi-finals on Sep. 6.

In an exciting but long (just under 4 hours) match, Novak Djoković (SRB) defeated Marin Cilic (CRO) to advance to the fourth round in the US Open. Man was it a long game! It was close to 1:00am in New York when it ended and lots of fans stayed on to watch the exciting match. I’m sure Djoković was quite relieved when it was finally over. He plays Tommy Robredo of Spain tomorrow Tuesday, September 2 in an early afternoon match. Check the US Open site for info and to watch the game live.
